Important Requirements for On-Ice Officials
Please be aware that on-ice officials need to have completed Respect in Sport (RIS), Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT), and a Criminal Record Check prior to being rostered to a team.
To ensure the safety and integrity of the game, all on-ice officials must meet specific requirements set by Hockey Canada before being rostered to a team. These measures are in place to protect players, officials, and all participants involved in the sport. Please be aware of the following mandatory prerequisites:
- Respect in Sport (RIS) Certification: All on-ice officials must complete the Respect in Sport (RIS) program. This certification educates officials on the importance of respectful behavior, effective communication, and conflict management, fostering a positive and safe environment for all participants. RIS training helps officials understand their role in promoting respect, inclusion, and fair play at all levels of hockey.
- Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT): Concussions are a significant concern in hockey, and it’s crucial that all officials are trained to recognize, understand, and appropriately respond to potential head injuries. The Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT) provides essential education on the signs and symptoms of concussions, management protocols, and the proper procedures for safe return to play. Completing CATT ensures that officials can make informed decisions to prioritize player safety.
- Criminal Record Check (CRC): To maintain a safe environment for all participants, officials are required to undergo a Criminal Record Check (CRC). This screening process helps protect young players by ensuring that those working closely with them have been vetted and are trustworthy. The CRC must be completed and approved before officials are permitted to be rostered to a team.
These requirements align with Hockey Canada’s commitment to ensuring that all individuals involved in the sport adhere to the highest standards of safety, integrity, and respect. By completing these certifications and checks, officials play a critical role in upholding the values of our game.
If you are an aspiring or returning on-ice official, please make sure to fulfill these requirements promptly to avoid any delays in being assigned to your team. Your compliance not only meets regulatory standards but also demonstrates your dedication to maintaining a safe and positive hockey environment for everyone.
